Small bathrooms require careful planning and close attention to detail to ensure that the space works well and looks stylish. Make sure you follow our top tips and advice for making the most of your small bathroom.
Laurence Llewelyn Bowen’s Top Tips
We recently attended the Ideal Home Show at Earls Court in London where we listened to an inspiring talk from the well-known interior designer Laurence Llewelyn Bowen. Laurence shared some helpful advice on how to make a small room look bigger. “Never draw attention to the corners”, and “make the room feel bigger by distracting the eye”, were some of his handy tips for enhancing a feeling of space. Installing a statement basin, stylish mirror or a designer shower are great ways to distract the eye and provide an interesting focal point.
Laurence also recommended, “using pale or neutral colours to make the walls appear further away”, which is a clever trick for creating the illusion of a more spacious bathroom. Also, “patterned wallpaper disguises the corners making the room look bigger”, which is another fantastic idea for a small bathroom. When choosing wallpaper check that it’s suitable for use in the bathroom and avoid dark patterns to prevent the room from feeling too enclosed.
Small bathrooms require good lighting to make the room appear bright and airy. Install lighting in any way you can, for example if you have a loft bathroom put in a skylight. If your bathroom has a window let in as much natural light as possible, if the bathroom doesn’t have a window replace a central light fitting with LED spotlights fitted across the ceiling so the whole space is illuminated.
Keep clutter hidden from view at all times by including storage such as a bathroom cabinet or a vanity unit and opt for reflective surfaces such as a gloss finish to bounce the light around. Surfaces full of toiletries will only make your small bathroom look even smaller than it really is so keep them out of sight. Vanity units are available with compact dimensions to help make the best use of space and it’s always a good idea to opt for a wall mounted design.
Choose Sleek Fittings
Sleek fittings such as wall mounted taps provide a minimalistic look and help to make small bathrooms appear more spacious. If you have a double ended bath fit a wall mounted tap centrally so you can get in and out of the bath easily and relax in comfort at either end. When choosing a basin and toilet look out for clean lines for an unfussy look and a neater finish. Wall hung toilets and basins provide the best solution for maximising floor space in a small bathroom. Frameless shower enclosures and low level shower trays are perfect too.
